Do you have to seperate

Hi everyone. Just looking for a quick pointer please.
We decided that we should divorce 4 years ago but held off for the benefit of the kids. There’s no arguments or hostility and the family and kids all know. We would like to time our divorce for summer 2019 but we have been told that we must separate first. Is that a fact or can we go straight to divorce without separating, we still intend to live under the same roof for a time after divorce so in fact noting will actually change, only the paperwork.
So what do you think, Do you have to separate to divorce?
