Is it the petitioner who pays for the divorce cost?

Hi
I have both a friend and myself who our respected other halves decided to separate and are asking for a divorce. In both cases, the grounds are simply because they are unhappy. There is no assault, abuse, etc… We both do not want the separation or divorce but do not want the hassle of lawyers and delay for our respected others.
The question however we have that we cannot find anywhere in Canada, is who pays for the divorce? In the UK and in some states they refer to the one asking for the divorce (petitioner), but we cannot find anything for Canada. Any insight would be greatly appreciated
