Financial Infidelity is on the Rise – More Spouses are Cheating

Hidden credit card statements and secret withdrawals may be signs your significant other is cheating on you, but not necessarily in the bedroom.

More people are now deceiving, or being deceived, by their partner about purchases, debts incurred, money earned or other joint financial issues. In 2014, Self.com and Today.com conducted a survey of almost 24,000 men and women and found that almost 50% of married adults admitted to keeping money secrets from their spouses.

The reality is, more people cheat financially on their partner than sexually.

Let’s be clear, financial infidelity is cheating. Just because it doesn’t involve sneaking off to have a clandestine sexual encounter, it does involve lies and secrets that can devastate a relationship.

Financial Infidelity, Investigation HotlineSome of the warning signs of financial infidelity include a partner who wants to control all of the finances, suspicious withdrawals from bank accounts, constant changing of the subject when money is being discussed or insisting upon having separate credit card accounts.

There are a few ways you can protect yourself and your relationship from financial infidelities that can destroy a marriage.

Disclose all money owed upfront. Setup a monthly meeting to discuss finances. Both partners should be involved in all major financial decisions. Limit individual accounts (bank, credit, etc.) and make them joint. It is very important to try to identify financial infidelity as early as possible in a relationship since recovering from it can be difficult, if not impossible.

If you suspect your spouse is cheating, you can confront him or her immediately, however, in most cases, your spouse will most likely deny that he or she is cheating. So what next? If you still suspect that he or she is cheating on you, the answer would be to seek the services of a private investigator to get the proof you need.
